Set it up in a low-pressure rehearsal
Lay the line out before the dog arrives when possible, put on gloves only if they do not impair handling, and practice feeding and collecting slack at walking speed. Never tie the line around your waist or hand unless using a purpose-built supported system exactly as instructed.
Inspect the whole system after movement
Check the entire line, stitching, knots if manufacturer-provided, clasp and attachment point before each session. Stop if the line is wet and hard to grip, wrapped, abraded or collecting debris that changes handling.
Know what this equipment cannot solve
