Medical Disclaimer & Review Process

DogSafe is a reference, not a veterinary service: the disclaimer and our DVM-review process, stated plainly.

DogSafe is a reference tool, not a veterinary service. This page states plainly what that means, and what our medical-review process does and doesn't promise.

The disclaimer

DogSafe provides general educational information about substances that can harm dogs. It does not provide veterinary advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and no page on this site creates a veterinarian-client-patient relationship. If your dog is in distress or may have ingested something dangerous, contact a licensed veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison control service immediately. Do not delay care because of anything you read here.

Our medical-review process

  • Pages are drafted from ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and Pet Poison Helpline source material, with the source cited on each page.
  • Certain medication and emergency action-guidance pages may be held for licensed-veterinarian (DVM) sign-off before publication.
  • Pages with a named 'Medically reviewed by' line have a recorded reviewer. Other published pages display a source-backed guidance notice and do not claim an individual medical review.
  • This process reduces error; it cannot eliminate it, and it is not a substitute for individualized veterinary care.

Emergency resources

ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435. Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661. Both operate 24/7; a consultation fee may apply. For immediate hands-on care, know your nearest emergency animal hospital before you need it.
