Food-grade sunflower kernels are not the same thing as the striped shells discarded at a game, a bag of bird feed or seed intended for planting. If you are considering a snack, start with plain, unsalted, shelled kernels and your dog's feeding plan, not a handful from an unknown bag.
Read shelled carefully
AKC: Sunflower kernels and shells recommends removing the outer shells and avoiding salted products. In shop descriptions, 'shelled kernels' usually means the shell has been removed; 'in-shell' means it is still there. Open the package and confirm what is actually inside rather than relying on an ambiguous shopping-list note.

The empty shell bowl is not an empty snack bowl
Put shells into a closed waste container as they accumulate. At an outdoor gathering, keep the discard bowl away from the edge of a table and check the ground before allowing the dog back into the area. If the dog reached it, explain that the missing material was shells rather than reporting a kernel count.
Keep planting seed out of the kitchen

Record what actually went missing
Keep the original bag, estimate the maximum amount and note whether any shell pile, plastic bag or other food was reached. A photo of the remaining product can clarify the form. If your dog appears unwell or swallowed shells or packaging, get veterinary advice rather than assuming the ingredient name is an all-clear.
