There is no safe at-home dose of a human medication for a dog. That is the whole answer, and it holds even for drugs vets genuinely prescribe to dogs, because the dose, the formulation and the interactions are what make them safe or not. The short answer
The confusion this page exists to resolve is real and understandable. Some of the drugs below are dispensed to dogs routinely by veterinarians, so an owner who reads that a drug is used in dogs can reasonably conclude that their own packet is usable. It is not, and the reason is dose and formulation rather than the molecule.
A human tablet is sized for a human. Splitting one does not reliably produce a canine dose, extended-release formulations cannot be divided at all, and combination products contain additional active ingredients that may be far more dangerous than the one you were aiming for. NSAIDs: the most common serious poisoning
Ibuprofen and Naproxen are the two to be most careful about, and naproxen is the more dangerous of the pair because it persists far longer in a dog. Dogs are considerably more sensitive to these drugs than people, and the mechanism is well understood: NSAIDs reduce the prostaglandins that maintain the stomach's protective lining and support renal blood flow.
The result is gastric ulceration, which can perforate, and acute kidney injury. Signs include vomiting, sometimes with blood, black tarry stool, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, increased or decreased drinking and urination, and lethargy.
Aspirin is in the same family and carries the same risks. Veterinary NSAIDs exist and are used safely in dogs, but they are different drugs at species-appropriate doses, which is precisely the distinction that makes the human packet unusable. Acetaminophen is a different mechanism entirely
Acetaminophen, sold as paracetamol or Tylenol, does not work like an NSAID and does not fail like one. In dogs the problem is that the liver's capacity to conjugate it is limited, so once that capacity is exceeded a reactive metabolite accumulates and causes liver injury, alongside damage to haemoglobin that impairs oxygen carriage.
The characteristic signs are brown or muddy gums, facial or paw swelling, laboured breathing, vomiting and lethargy. Cats are far more sensitive again, which is worth knowing in a mixed household.
Cold & flu medicine deserves particular attention here, because these are combination products. A single capsule may contain acetaminophen alongside a decongestant and an antihistamine, and the decongestant is frequently the more acutely dangerous component.

Opioids

Antacids and supplements: the Tums question
Tums is one of the most searched items on this site and the answer is more nuanced than a straight no. Calcium carbonate itself is not highly toxic to dogs, and that is why the query keeps coming: people are told it is basically chalk.
The objections are practical. It does not treat the underlying problem, so it delays a diagnosis while the dog stays unwell. It interferes with the absorption of other drugs. Some formulations are sugar-free, and sugar-free means a sweetener that must be checked against the list of products that can contain xylitol, because xylitol is dangerous to dogs at any amount. And a dog that needs an antacid usually needs a vet rather than an antacid.
Iron supplements are a genuinely serious exposure and are frequently underestimated because they are sold as a vitamin.
