Measure more than width
Record width at several heights, baseboards, trim, wall material, floor slope and door swing. Check whether extensions are approved and how they change the supported range. Never stack gates or add blocks unless the manufacturer specifically provides the configuration.
Test without challenging the dog
Install and verify latches with no dog present, then observe ordinary controlled proximity. Do not encourage jumping, pushing or climbing as a product test. If the dog works at the gate, change management rather than waiting for a failure.
