Name the vitamin and its chemical form

Find the original bottle and read the nutrient or medicine name exactly. D3 may be labeled cholecalciferol; D2 may be labeled ergocalciferol. A prescription vitamin-related medicine is not interchangeable with an ordinary dietary supplement. Record the ingredient's printed name even when it seems unfamiliar, rather than translating everything into “vitamin D.” Photograph the whole panel and prescription information when relevant.

Why vitamin D gets particular attention

Pet Poison Helpline's vitamin-D guidance describes disturbances involving calcium and phosphorus and the potential for kidney injury after excessive exposure. A supplement, vitamin-D-containing rodenticide and prescription product have different labels and assessment needs, even when related substances are involved. If a rodenticide was accessible, report it as rodenticide rather than calling it a supplement.

Early lack of symptoms is not a reliable endpoint. Increased thirst or urination, vomiting, reduced appetite or weakness should be reported, but their absence cannot replace assessment of the product and amount. The clinic may use blood and urine testing and repeat monitoring according to the case. This is why a reassuring photo of an alert dog or a human nutrient recommendation cannot resolve a concentrated D exposure.

Units are part of the identity

Copy IU, mcg, μg or mg exactly, with the labeled serving size. Do not use a calculator that asks for milligrams when your package states micrograms without verifying the conversion with the team. Also distinguish amount per drop, per milliliter, per softgel and per serving. A spilled liquid with an uncertain swallowed volume needs a range, not a guessed count of drops.

Keep concentration separate from bottle size: a large bottle is not necessarily a stronger formula, and a tiny vial is not necessarily a small exposure. Tell the clinic whether the product was recently opened, the approximate original contents and what remains. If the dog could reach more than one formulation, record each in its own row; adding unlike unit labels together produces an unusable exposure estimate.

Do not turn an A/D/E/K comparison into a treatment plan

Fat-soluble is a property of a group, not evidence that all members have identical consequences in dogs. Merck's OTC reference discusses vitamin-specific concerns. Applying one member's dose, onset or prognosis to another would be an unsupported shortcut. A label showing several members also needs the other actives and sweeteners assessed.

Do not administer vitamin K because an unidentified product might have been rat poison. Rodenticides have different active ingredients, and a veterinarian needs the actual package to choose the approach. Do not give extra calcium, another vitamin or a human “detox” remedy after supplement access. Nutritional importance does not make these substances suitable home antidotes or justify experimenting while professional help is available.

Document the exposure and secure the remaining supply

Bring the bottle, a photograph of the panels and any remaining capsule or liquid. Report dog weight, health conditions, medicines, earliest and latest access time, maximum missing amount and chewed packaging. The call checklist keeps those facts together. Cholecalciferol is vitamin D3. Still report the product, concentration and context; a supplement and rodenticide containing a related active are not the same package or exposure history.

Are A, E and K as toxic as D?

Do not infer equal toxicity from their grouping. The exact compound, amount, formulation and dog determine the assessment; this guide deliberately does not rank them with invented scores.

What if the label says IU?

Send the amount and IU unit exactly as printed, together with serving size and missing units. Ask the team to verify any needed conversion rather than silently treating IU as mg.

Should I wait until my dog drinks more?

No. Call after a possible concentrated vitamin-D exposure rather than waiting for thirst or other signs. Testing and monitoring decisions depend on the exposure, not only visible symptoms.
