Is fish good for dogs, or just not harmful?

It is genuinely good, which is not true of most human foods dogs like. Fish is a high-protein, low-carbohydrate food, and oily fish carries omega-3 fatty acids that dogs cannot make efficiently on their own.

The two that matter are EPA and DHA. Using USDA FoodData Central values, 100 g of wild Atlantic salmon carries about 0.32 g EPA and 1.12 g DHA. Canned sardines with bone carry about 0.47 g EPA and 0.51 g DHA in the same weight, plus roughly 382 mg of calcium from the softened bones. That is why fish shows up in so many joint and skin formulas on the shelf.

Compare that to canned light tuna in water, which carries about 0.05 g EPA and 0.22 g DHA per 100 g. Tuna is a lean protein, and it is fine, but it is not the omega-3 powerhouse that oily fish is. If the reason you are feeding fish is the omega-3 fatty acids, sardines and salmon do that job several times better than tuna does.

The four things that actually decide the answer

Almost every question that reaches a vet about fish comes down to one of four variables. Working through them in order will resolve most situations faster than looking up the specific fish.

  • Raw or cooked. Raw fish carries parasites and bacteria, and raw freshwater fish carries an enzyme that destroys thiamine. See raw fish and dogs.

If the fish is plain, fully cooked, boneless, unseasoned, and a reasonable size for your dog, you have already handled all four variables. That is the whole safe case.

Mercury: the short version

Mercury builds up in fish over the animal's life, and predators accumulate what their prey already carried. That means the two things driving high levels of mercury are how long the fish lived and how high it sat in the food chain.

The Merck Veterinary Manual lists fish-based diets and fish oil supplements as a real potential source of mercury exposure in dogs and cats. So the concern is legitimate. What is missing from most of the internet is a sense of scale: for a dog eating occasional plain fish as a treat, mercury is not the risk that matters. For a dog on a fish-heavy diet built on large predatory species, over years, it becomes worth thinking about.

Types of tuna, and why the word alone is not enough

Tuna is the single most searched fish question owners have, and it is the one where the name hides the most. Types of tuna differ by a factor of five in mercury before you even open the can.

Canned light tuna, which is usually skipjack, averages 0.126 ppm. Canned albacore, sold as white tuna, averages 0.350 ppm. Fresh or frozen bigeye reaches 0.689 ppm. The FDA and EPA put canned light tuna on their Best Choices list and albacore one tier down on Good Choices, in advice revised in October 2021.

So is tuna good for dogs? In small amounts, cooked tuna and canned light tuna are safe for dogs and are a decent lean protein. The practical rule is that the amount of tuna matters more than whether tuna is allowed, and that if you feed your dog tuna regularly, light beats albacore by a wide margin. How much fish can a dog eat?

There is no published safe dose of fish, because fish is not a toxin and does not have one. The limits that apply are practical ones: calories, fat, sodium, and in the case of large predatory species, mercury.

A widely used feeding rule of thumb is that treats and extras should stay at roughly a tenth of a dog's daily calories, with the rest coming from a complete and balanced diet. Fish is an extra. It is not a complete diet on its own, because plain fish does not carry the calcium, vitamin and mineral balance a dog needs long term. A dog fed mostly fish and nothing else will develop deficiencies.

The sensible framing is a topper or a treat: a spoonful of sardines on dinner, a few flakes of salmon, a small piece of plain cooked white fish. Your vet can give you a real number for your dog's weight, body condition and any existing kidney, pancreatic or heart conditions, all of which change the answer.

Dogs on a sodium-restricted diet for heart or kidney disease are the exception worth naming. For those dogs, salted canned fish is not a small matter, and portioning should come from your vet rather than from any website.

Shellfish, which is a different question

Shellfish is generally very low in mercury. Scallops average 0.003 ppm and shrimp 0.009 ppm, which are among the lowest figures the FDA records for anything. If mercury were the only concern, shellfish would be the obvious pick.

The risks are structural instead. Shells, tails and fragments cause choking and obstruction, which is a surgical problem rather than a poisoning one. Raw shellfish carries pathogens, and raw clams specifically carry the same thiaminase found in raw freshwater fish. And restaurant shellfish is nearly always cooked in butter, garlic or wine, which turns a low-risk food into an allium or fat exposure.

  • Shrimp: plain, cooked, peeled and deveined is a good treat. Shrimp tails are not.
  • Scallops: the lowest mercury of anything on this page, but usually pan-seared in butter.
  • Crab and lobster: plain meat is fine, shells are dangerous, and the butter is the real calorie load.
  • Clams and mussels: almost always cooked with garlic or wine. Judge the sauce, not the shellfish.
  • Oysters: raw oysters carry pathogens that cooking removes.
  • Calamari: squid is low risk, but fried calamari is a fatty food exposure and a pancreatitis concern.

How to cook fish for a dog

The method matters less than what you leave out. A dog does not need the fish to taste like anything, which removes almost every decision a person would normally make while cooking.

Bake, poach, steam or pan-cook it dry. Skip the oil, the butter, the salt, the lemon, the garlic and the pepper. Cook it through rather than to a pink center, because the point of cooking is to kill parasites and bacteria, and a rare fillet has not done that.

  • Cook it fully. Undercooked fish keeps the risks that cooking is there to remove.
  • Use no oil, butter, salt or seasoning. Plain is the entire goal, not a compromise.
  • Debone carefully before serving, running a finger along the fillet to find pin bones.
  • Remove the skin unless you are deliberately giving a small piece. Fish skin is where most of the fat sits.
  • Cut it to a size your dog cannot inhale whole, which matters more for fast eaters and flat-faced breeds.
  • Let it cool before serving. Dogs do not wait, and mouth burns are avoidable.
  • Refrigerate leftovers and use them within a couple of days, as you would for yourself.

Smoked, cured and dried fish

These deserve separating out, because they look cooked and often are not. Cold-smoked fish, including most smoked salmon and lox, is cured rather than heat-cooked, so it can still carry the parasites raw fish carries. Hot-smoked fish has been cooked through and is a different product entirely, though the label rarely says which you have.

Either way the curing process adds a lot of salt, which is the more reliable problem. A slice of smoked salmon is not an emergency for most dogs. A packet of it is a genuine sodium load worth calling about.

Dried fish treats sold for dogs are a separate case and are usually fine, since they are made for this purpose and dried thoroughly. The ones to check are dried fish skins, which are very high in fat, and any product with added salt or seasoning.

Fish allergies, and fish as a novel protein

Fish gets used in veterinary elimination diets precisely because many dogs have never eaten it. A protein the immune system has not met before is unlikely to be the one causing an existing reaction, which makes fish a useful diagnostic tool for suspected food allergy.

Two caveats keep it from being a home remedy. An elimination diet only proves anything if it is run strictly, which usually means a single protein and nothing else for eight to twelve weeks, including treats and flavored medications. Casual swapping does not produce a usable answer.

And dogs can be allergic to fish. It is less common than beef, dairy and chicken sensitivities, but it exists. A dog that develops itching, ear infections or digestive upset after starting fish is telling you something, and that is worth reporting to your vet rather than working around.

Puppies, seniors and dogs with health conditions

The general guidance on this page assumes a healthy adult dog. Several groups need a different answer, and in each case the difference is worth knowing before you serve anything.

  • Puppies: growing dogs have tight calcium and phosphorus requirements, and toppers displace the balanced food that is meeting them. Keep extras small and ask your vet.
  • Seniors: usually fine, and the omega-3 fatty acids may be welcome, but many older dogs are on kidney or heart diets where sodium is restricted.
  • Dogs with pancreatitis history: avoid oily fish, fish skin and anything fried. Fat is the trigger, not the fish.
  • Dogs with kidney disease: protein and phosphorus are often controlled, and canned fish with bones is high in phosphorus. This is a vet question, not a general one.
  • Dogs with heart disease: sodium is usually restricted, which rules out most salted canned fish.
  • Pregnant dogs: the human mercury advice exists specifically to protect fetal development. There is no canine equivalent, but it is a sensible reason to stay with low-mercury species.

Fish in commercial dog foods

Fish is a mainstream ingredient in dog foods, and a fish-based kibble or wet food is a normal, complete diet. That is a different situation from feeding fish off your plate, because a commercial diet is formulated to be nutritionally complete and its fish content has been through the manufacturer's own sourcing and testing.

Two things are worth knowing. First, fish oil supplements are on the Merck Veterinary Manual's list of potential mercury exposure routes for dogs, so a supplement is not automatically a free pass just because it is sold for pets. Second, the canning process fully cooks fish, which destroys both the parasites and the thiaminase enzyme. That is why canned fish in a dog's diet does not carry the raw-fish risks at all.

What to do if your dog ate fish they should not have

Fish is rarely an emergency by itself. What determines urgency is which of the four variables was involved, and whether anything genuinely toxic came with it.

  • Bones swallowed: watch for gagging, retching, drooling, pawing at the mouth, or blood. Do not reach into the throat. Call your vet, and go in for repeated retching or any breathing change.
  • Raw fish, especially raw salmon or trout in the Pacific Northwest: call your vet now, do not wait for signs. Salmon poisoning disease has a delay of about a week and is fatal in most untreated dogs. This is the one fish scenario that is a true emergency.
  • A large fatty portion, such as fish skin, fried fish or a whole oily fillet: watch for vomiting, a hunched posture, or refusing food, which can indicate pancreatitis. Call if any appear.
  • Something salty in quantity, such as a jar of anchovies or a bottle of fish sauce: offer water, do not withhold it, and call. See salt.
